Tattered describes cloth, clothes, paper, books, flags — anything soft — that is old and torn. Not just worn thin: the key idea is that pieces are hanging loose. A tattered coat has ripped edges and threads coming off it; a tattered book has its corners bent and its cover half off. It nearly always carries the feeling of poverty, neglect, or long hard use. You would not say 'tattered' about a shirt you tore yesterday — the word wants time in it. Teachers and writers also use it for things that are not cloth at all: a tattered reputation, a tattered friendship, a tattered peace agreement. That use means the same thing — something once whole, now hanging together in pieces. It is a slightly literary word; in everyday speech people more often say 'torn' or 'falling apart', and you meet 'tattered' most in stories and news writing.
組成From Middle English tatered, from Old Norse tǫturr, meaning a rag or a hanging piece of torn cloth. It began as a noun — the rag itself — and later people re-read it as tatter + -ed, 'having tatters on it', which is also how the verb 'to tatter' was born afterwards.
