組成From Middle English tatered, from Old Norse tǫturr, meaning a rag or a hanging piece of torn cloth. It began as a noun — the rag itself — and later people re-read it as tatter + -ed, 'having tatters on it', which is also how the verb 'to tatter' was born afterwards.
