A tassel is a bunch of threads tied together tightly at the top, so that the loose ends hang down in a soft bundle. You hang it on something as a decoration. You see tassels on the corners of cushions, on the pull-cords of curtains and blinds, on the edge of a rug or a shawl, on the belt of a , on bookmarks, and on the hats people wear at graduation — that little hanging thread on the flat cap is a tassel, and at some schools you move it from one side to the other when you graduate. In Taiwan you also see them on temple lanterns and on Chinese knots. So the picture is always the same: threads, tied at one end, hanging free at the other. A tassel is not the same as a fringe. A fringe is a whole row of loose threads running along an edge; a tassel is one separate bundle hanging by itself, though a fringe can be made of many small tassels in a row. The word is also a verb, though you will meet it much less: to tassel something is to put tassels on it. And there is one special use — when corn () grows, the flower part at the very top of the plant is called the tassel, and farmers say the corn is tasselling. That is a real farming word, not a poetic one.
組成From Old French tassel, from Latin tāxillus, 'a small cube' — the little dice-shaped thing, related to tālus, 'ankle bone' (ankle bones were used as dice). The meaning drifted a long way: from a small square fastening on a cloak to the hanging bunch of threads we mean today.
