To tase someone is to shoot them with a Taser — a weapon that fires two small darts on wires and sends a strong electric current through the body, so the person's muscles lock up and they fall down and cannot fight or run for a few seconds. It is a verb, and it almost always has a person as its object: the police tased him. You hear it in news reports, in police talk, and in ordinary conversation about something that happened. The word is fairly new and quite informal — some careful writers still prefer 'used a Taser on him', and you will also see it spelled 'taze'. The past form is 'tased' (or 'tasered'), and both are common; neither is wrong. People also use it as a joke or an exaggeration among friends, the way English speakers do with any violent word — 'I nearly tased my brother' just means someone was extremely annoying. Note that the word is not general: it does not mean any electric shock. If you touch a bad plug, you are not tased. It only means being hit by this particular police weapon, and that is why the word carries a whole scene with it — police, someone refusing to stop, a crowd filming on phones. In the United States, where these weapons are common, the word can also carry an argument inside it, because people disagree strongly about when police should use one.
