Tarzan is a made-up character from adventure novels by the American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, beginning in 1912. The story: an English baby is left alone in the African forest after his parents die, and apes raise him. He grows up strong, half-wild, swinging through the trees on vines, and later meets people from his own world — especially a woman called Jane.

Because everyone knows the picture, the name is used as an ordinary noun and an image: a man who is very physical and not very polished may be called 'a bit of a Tarzan'; a rope you swing on is 'a Tarzan swing'; and 'Tarzan English' (or 'me Tarzan, you Jane' English) is the well-known phrase for speaking in broken, grammar-free fragments. That last one is a joke about the old films, not the books.
