The Tardis is the time machine in the long-running British TV programme Doctor Who. From the outside it is a tall blue wooden box — a copy of the police telephone boxes that stood on British streets long ago — but when you open the door, the inside is a huge control room, far bigger than the box could possibly hold. The name is an abbreviation of Time And Relative Dimension In Space. Because Doctor Who has been on television since 1963, almost every British person knows it, and the word has escaped the programme: people say a room, a bag, or a shop 'is a bit of a Tardis', or 'like a Tardis', meaning it looks small from outside but turns out to be surprisingly big inside. That is a friendly, joking use, and it is the one a student is most likely to meet in ordinary reading. It is a name, so it takes a capital T, and you will see it written both Tardis and TARDIS.
組成An abbreviation made up in 1963 for the programme: Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space. Each capital letter in TARDIS is the first letter of one of those words.
