A tankini is a two-piece swimming outfit for women: a bikini bottom worn with a vest-style top that covers the stomach and back. The top has no sleeves, and it usually hangs down to the waist or the hip. People choose a tankini when they want the comfort of two pieces — easy to take off in the toilet, easy to mix sizes — but do not want to show their middle. It is very common at hotel pools, at swimming lessons, and with women who feel a bikini is too little and a one-piece is too much trouble. The word is written the way it sounds and is not formal at all; you will meet it in shops and clothing websites rather than in books. How much it covers varies a lot: some tankini tops end just above the belly button, others go past the hips almost like a short dress.
A blend of two words squeezed into one: tank (from tank top, the sleeveless vest-style shirt) + the -kini ending taken from bikini. So the name literally describes it: a tank top on the upper half, a bikini on the lower half.
