A tankard is a large drinking cup for beer, with a handle, usually made of metal — pewter or silver, sometimes glass with a heavy base — and often with a hinged lid you flip open with your thumb. Think of an old English pub, or a Viking film, or a fantasy tavern: that is where the word lives. Real people rarely drink from one today; the word survives in three places. First, history and stories. Second, gifts and prizes: an engraved pewter tankard is a traditional present for a retirement, a wedding, or a sports club award in Britain, and many sit on shelves never used. Third, a few traditional pubs keep them for regular customers. It is a countable noun, and like most container words it can also mean the amount inside: 'he drank three tankards'. In everyday English today the ordinary words are 'a pint' (for beer in a pub), 'a beer mug', or 'a glass'. Americans are more likely to say 'stein' for the German kind. So tankard is not a word you need for ordering a drink — it is a word you need for reading.
組成The origin is genuinely uncertain, and dictionaries disagree. It comes into English from Middle English tankard, where it first meant a large tub for carrying liquid, and is probably connected to Middle Dutch tanckaert. Where that came from is guesswork: the Oxford English Dictionary suggests a reshaping of Latin cantharus, a large two-handled cup, while others have proposed French tant quart, 'as much as a quarter'. The 'drinking vessel' meaning is only recorded from the late 1400s. Since scholars differ, treat all of this as a maybe.
