Tajik is really a people-and-language word, though dictionaries often file it under the country. A Tajik is a person of the Tajik people — a Persian-speaking people of Central Asia. Tajik is also their language, which is very close to Persian (); the big visible difference is that in it has usually been written in letters, the ones Russian uses, because of the Soviet years. And it works as an adjective: Tajik music, a Tajik village, Tajik bread. Here is the part worth knowing: Tajiks do not all live in , and not everyone in is Tajik. Millions of Tajiks live in Afghanistan and Uzbekistan too. So 'Tajik' points at a people, while '' points at a country — that is why you sometimes also see 'Tajikistani' for 'a citizen of ', which keeps the two apart. In everyday English, though, most people just say Tajik for both, and nobody will correct you. This is not a common word for most ; you meet it in news, travel writing, and geography class.
組成From Classical Persian تاجیک (tājīk), which in Central Asia meant roughly 'someone who is not a Turk' — that is, the Persian-speaking neighbours. Further back it goes through Middle Persian to an Arabic clan name, Tayy. You may hear that Tajik comes from a Persian word for 'crown' (tāj). It is a lovely story and people repeat it, but it is not true.
