1. 1

A tailpiece is a part added at the end of something. Most often it is about writing: a short extra piece at the end of a chapter, an article or a book — a closing note, a small final remark, something added after the main text is finished. Editors and writers use the word; ordinary speakers rarely do, so it feels . In old printed books it also meant a small decoration printed at the foot of the last page of a chapter, to fill the empty space — a little drawing or ornament. More generally it can be any end part of an object: the last section of a pipe, a shaft, a piece of machinery. There is also one common technical use that has nothing to do with writing: on a violin, or guitar, the tailpiece is the piece at the bottom end of the instrument that the strings are to. Music students meet the word there long before they meet it in books. In all these uses the idea is the same — the piece at the tail, the bit at the end.
