Like many martial arts, it is organised by coloured belts, from white up to black, and students learn set sequences of movements as well as sparring. It has been a full Olympic sport since 2000, and Taiwan has a real history in it — it is one of the sports where athletes have won Olympic medals, so most students will already know the sport even if the English spelling is new.

The word is used uncountably, like other sport names這個字跟其他運動名稱一樣是不可數的 you 'do taekwondo' or 'practise taekwondo', not 'a taekwondo'你會說'do taekwondo'或'practise taekwondo',不會說'a taekwondo'
組成Borrowed straight from Korean 태권도 / 跆拳道. The three Korean syllables each carry a meaning that the Chinese characters show clearly: 跆 tae, to strike or trample with the foot; 拳 kwon, the fist; 道 do, the way or path. So the name means something like 'the way of the foot and the fist' — the order of the pieces tells you why the kicks come first.
