A taco is a Mexican dish: a flat round , traditionally made from corn, folded in half around a filling — usually meat, and often beans, cheese, salad, onion, and a squeeze of lime.
There are two kinds worth telling apart, because students often only know one. The hard taco is the crisp U-shaped shell sold in supermarket kits — that is largely an American invention, and it is what most people in Taiwan picture. The soft taco, a warm soft folded over the filling, is what people eat in Mexico, usually small, usually two or three at a time from a street stall. Both are called tacos in English; if the difference matters you say hard-shell or soft-shell.

The word also lives in compounds you will meet: taco shell, taco truck, taco stand, taco , and fish tacos (a well-known variety). In casual American speech it can also work as a verb meaning to bend or fold something in half — a bicycle wheel that hits a badly is said to be tacoed. That use is slang, mostly among cyclists, and you can leave it aside until you meet it.
