  1. 1小手鼓、單手鼓（中世紀的），常跟一支笛子一起，一個人吹笛兼打鼓。台灣沒有對應的樂器，通常就照樣講「中世紀小鼓」。

    A tabor is a small drum. It is shallow — not deep like a modern drum — and it hangs from the player's shoulder or arm, so that only one hand is needed to hit it, usually with a small stick. The other hand is free, and that is the whole point: the player holds a pipe (a simple flute you can play one-handed) in the free hand. One person then makes both the tune and the beat. This pairing has a name of its own, 'pipe and tabor', and you meet it a lot in old English music, in music for dancing, and in Morris dancing, which people still do today.

    The word belongs to the Middle Ages and to the world of old music. Nobody uses it for a drum in a rock band. Where you will meet it: history books, museum labels, folk-music writing, Shakespeare and other old plays, and church or festival descriptions. There is also a rare verb 'to tabor', meaning to beat or drum on something — you would only find that in old writing.

    Watch out for the other 'Tabor' with a capital letter: it is a place name (Mount Tabor) and a family name, and it has nothing to do with the drum.

組成It came into English from Old French 'tabour'. Before that the trail runs back through Arabic ṭunbūr to an old Persian word — and interestingly, in Persian that word meant a stringed instrument, not a drum. So the meaning shifted along the way.
