To systematize something is to take a pile of facts, numbers, ideas, or ways of doing things and put them into one clear, regular order — so that everything has a place and you can find it, use it, and repeat it. The key idea is not just tidying up; it is building a *system*: one set of rules that covers every case, instead of handling each case however you feel that day. A librarian systematizes books; a company systematizes how it answers customers; a scientist systematizes the plants he has collected. This is a fairly formal, work-and-study word. You will meet it in reports, in business writing, and in academic writing far more often than in talk between friends — in speech people say 'organize', 'sort out', or 'set up a system for'. British writers often spell it 'systematise'. One more thing, though: the word carries a small feeling that things were messy *before*, and often a feeling that the person doing it is being very thorough — sometimes a bit too thorough. So 'He has systematized his sock drawer' is a small joke. Careful writers also use it about people who take scattered ideas and build them into a theory: 'Later thinkers systematized what he had only sketched.' In that use, nothing physical is moved at all.
