A performer in a film who looks like a real human actor but is entirely made by computer — a digital actor. The word covers two rather different things that people lump together: a completely invented character built and animated on a computer, and a digital recreation of a real actor, sometimes one who has died or who was much younger at the time of filming. That second use is where the arguments live, because it raises the question of who owns an actor's face and voice, and whether a person can 'perform' in a film made after their death. This is a specialist, journalistic word — you meet it in film magazines, technology writing and debates about AI in Hollywood, not in ordinary conversation. Most people would just say 'a digital actor' or 'a CGI character'. It also has a faintly clever, coined feel to it, and writers often use it with a touch of irony, because a synthespian is exactly the thing a real thespian fears.
