A syllabus is the written plan of what a course covers: the topics, in order, and often the readings, the dates, the assignments and how the grade is decided. It answers the question 'what will we actually study in this class?' A syllabus can belong to one teacher's course (the given out in the first week) or to a whole national exam system — in Britain and in much of Asia, exam boards publish a syllabus that every school must teach toward. Two comparisons help. A syllabus is narrower than a 'curriculum': the curriculum is everything a school teaches across all subjects and years, while a syllabus is one subject or one course inside it. And a syllabus is bigger than a 'schedule' or 'timetable', which only tells you when things happen, not what is in them. British and American usage differ a little: in the US the common word is 'syllabus' for a single professor's course document, while 'course outline' or 'course description' also appear; in Britain 'syllabus' more often points at the official content list for an exam. The plural is the strange part — you will see both 'syllabuses' and 'syllabi'. Both are correct; 'syllabuses' is safer and more common in modern writing, and 'syllabi' sounds more academic. It is a countable noun: 'a syllabus', 'two syllabuses'.

組成Borrowed from Medieval Latin syllabus 'list' — and the funny part is that this Latin word is a mistake. A 1470s printed edition of Cicero's letters misread the Greek word sittýba, which meant the little parchment label stuck on a scroll to say what was inside — in other words, a table of contents. The misprint 'syllabos' was then treated as a real word, helped along by the look of Greek syllambánō 'to put together'. So 'syllabus' means 'list' because of a printer's error that nobody ever corrected.
