Sybaritic describes a life, a place, or a taste devoted to expensive comfort and pleasure — soft beds, long meals, warm baths, nothing difficult. It is a formal, literary word; you meet it in travel writing, restaurant reviews and novels, and almost never in speech. The tone is interesting, and worth watching for. Strictly it carries mild : too much comfort, no discipline, a life gone soft. But writers today often use it with obvious enjoyment — 'a sybaritic weekend at the spa' is usually a recommendation, not a criticism. So the same word can or , and only the surrounding sentence tells you which. It is close to 'luxurious', but not the same: 'luxurious' describes the things, while 'sybaritic' describes the person or life that gives itself over to them. A hotel room is luxurious; the guest who never leaves it is sybaritic. Related words are 'sybarite' (such a person) and 'hedonistic', which is broader — hedonism is about pleasure of any kind, sybaritism specifically about soft, costly comfort.
