Swotty describes someone who studies too much and seems to have nothing else in their life — and it is said with disapproval or teasing, not admiration. It is British, informal, and mostly school and university language. Calling a classmate swotty is a small insult: it suggests they only care about marks, that they are dull company, perhaps that they try too obviously to please teachers. It can also describe a thing rather than a person — 'a swotty school', 'swotty glasses' — meaning it has that studious, over-serious flavour. Two honest things to add. First, it is milder than it sounds; among friends it can be almost affectionate, closer to teasing than to real contempt. Second, attitudes have softened, and younger British speakers use it less than their parents did. The base word is 'swot': as a noun a person who studies too hard, as a verb to study hard, especially cramming before an exam ('I'm swotting up on history').
