The soft yellow seeds of a maize plant, eaten as a vegetable — the sweet kind of corn, grown to be eaten by people rather than fed to animals or ground into flour. It is what comes in the small tins you stir into salad or fried rice, and it is also the corn on the cob you hold in two hands. This is mainly a British word, written as one word or sometimes two. In American English people usually just say corn, and say sweet corn only when they need to separate it from field corn. So on a British pizza menu you will see sweetcorn as a topping; an American menu would say corn. It is an uncountable word — you eat some sweetcorn, not a sweetcorn — though the individual pieces are kernels.
