To say nice, things to someone so that they will do what you want. The praise is the tool, not the point — you compliment your boss because you want Friday off, not because you admire her. It is used as a verb, usually with someone and into: he sweet-talked his father into lending him the car. As a noun it is written as two words or with a : don't listen to his sweet talk. The word is informal and light. It does not sound evil the way "lie" or "cheat" does, and people often use it about themselves, half joking — "I'll sweet-talk the guard and we'll get in." But there is always a small edge to it: if you say someone sweet-talked you, you are admitting you were handled a little. It is very common about getting past rules, getting a discount, getting a favour from someone who should have said no. It is also used about romance, where the sweet talk is aimed at winning someone's affection, and there it can sound charming or hollow depending on who is telling the story.
