A city on the south coast of Wales, the second largest in the country after Cardiff, sitting on a wide bay. It grew rich in the 1800s from copper and coal: metal was shipped in and out of its docks, and for a while it was called 'Copperopolis'. That industry has gone, and today people know it for Swansea University, for the long beach of Swansea Bay and the Gower peninsula just beside it, and as a base for visiting the Brecon Beacons mountains inland. It is also known as the home town of the poet Dylan Thomas, who called it an 'ugly, lovely town'. In English the name is said 'SWON-zee' — the second part sounds like 'zee', not like the word 'sea', which surprises people because of the spelling. In Welsh the city has a completely different name, Abertawe, meaning 'mouth of the river Tawe', and you will see both names on road signs there. As a proper noun it takes no 'the': you go to Swansea, you live in Swansea.
組成From Old Norse 'Sveins ey', meaning 'Sveinn's island' — Sveinn was a Norse man's name, and 'ey' meant island. Norse sailors named it; the Welsh name Abertawe is unrelated.
