Describing land that is soft, wet and often partly under water — the kind of ground where your foot sinks and water comes up around it. A swamp is that kind of wet land, often with trees growing in it, and 'swampy' is the adjective: swampy ground, a swampy field, swampy forest. You use it both for real swamps and, more loosely, for any ground that is too wet — a garden after a week of rain can be described as swampy, even though nobody would call it a swamp. It nearly always sounds unpleasant: swampy ground is hard to walk on, bad for building, full of mosquitoes. People also stretch the word to how things feel: swampy air or swampy weather means hot, heavy and very humid — a Taiwan summer afternoon is swampy. Sometimes a person says their shirt or their shoes feel swampy, meaning damp and sticky with sweat. That stretched use is informal and a bit comic, but very common in speech. You can say 'swampier' and 'swampiest'.
