A surrogate is a person or thing that takes the place of another, standing in when the real one can't be there. The phrase you'll hear most is 'surrogate mother' — a woman who carries and gives birth to a baby for someone else, often because that other person cannot become pregnant themselves. You can also use 'surrogate' more generally, as an adjective, for anything acting as a substitute — a 'surrogate family', for example.
