Suriname is a small country on the northern coast of South America, sitting between Guyana on one side and French Guiana on the other, with Brazil to the south. Its capital is Paramaribo, and its population is only about half a million — smaller than many single districts of . Most of the land is thick rainforest, and nearly everyone lives on the narrow coastal strip. What makes it unusual is worth knowing, because it explains the name. It was a Dutch colony called Dutch Guiana, and it became independent in 1975. So Dutch is still the official language — the only country in the Americas where that is true — although in the street people speak Sranan Tongo, and also Hindi, Javanese and Chinese, because the Dutch brought workers from India and Indonesia after slavery ended. It is one of the most mixed societies in the world for its size. The adjective and the word for a person from there is Surinamese. The country name is sometimes written Surinam in older English books, without the final e; Suriname is the modern spelling and the one the country itself uses. Say it roughly "soo-ri-NAH-muh." Do not confuse it with Guyana next door, an English-speaking former British colony, or with French Guiana, which is not an independent country at all but part of France.
