A suntan is the browner colour that pale skin turns after time in the sun. It is countable and usually goes with have or get: 'she has a lovely suntan', 'he got a suntan in Okinawa'. In quick speech people usually just say tan — 'nice tan!' — and suntan survives most strongly inside other words: suntan , suntan oil. There is also a verb, to suntan, but it is uncommon; (lie in the sun on purpose) is what people actually say. Worth knowing culturally: in much of Europe and America a suntan reads as healthy and well-travelled, which is why people lie on beaches to get one, whereas in Taiwan and much of East Asia pale skin is often preferred and people carry umbrellas to avoid exactly this. Same word, opposite feelings — so 'You've got a great suntan!' is meant as a compliment in English, even if it would not land as one here.
