1. 1

In Islam, the body of custom built on what the Prophet Muhammad said, did, and approved of — his way of living, taken as a model for how Muslims should live. It sits beside the Qur'an: the Qur'an is the revealed book, the Sunna is the Prophet's practice, and together they are the main sources of Islamic law and daily religious life. The record of it comes down through the hadith, the reported accounts of his words and acts. It is usually written with a capital S and often spelled Sunnah, sometimes Sunnat. Be careful with a near neighbour: is the name of the larger of the two main branches of Islam, and although the two words come from the same root, they are not — the Sunna is a body of practice, a is a person or a branch. Muslims of every branch, including Shia Muslims, follow a sunna, though they differ over which reports to accept.
