A very tall garden plant with one big flower head — bright yellow around a wide dark middle full of seeds. It can grow taller than a person. The seeds are eaten as a snack, and pressed for sunflower oil, which is one of the ordinary cooking oils in a supermarket. The word carries feeling as well as fact: in pictures, cards and shop names, sunflowers stand for and bright weather. You will also see "sunflower" used before other nouns — sunflower seeds, sunflower oil.
向日葵(食用時常說「葵花」:葵花子、葵花油)
組成sun + flower. Compare the old English word sunbloom. People connect it with the sun because of the big yellow face; young plants do turn to follow the sun, though the tall flowering ones mostly stop doing that.
