To break or tear something apart into pieces, usually with force. This is an old, literary word — you will meet it in poetry, in the Bible, in fantasy novels and in old songs, but almost never in ordinary conversation. If a modern speaker says 'the family was sundered', they are choosing a heavy, formal, slightly dramatic word on purpose. It is often used about things that ought to have stayed joined: a country, a friendship, a marriage. The one place you probably already know it is in the phrase from the wedding service, 'let no man put asunder' — 'asunder' means 'into separate pieces', and it is the same word. In fact 'asunder' survives better than plain 'sunder' does. Do not use it in everyday writing; use 'split', 'separate' or 'tear apart'. Just recognise it when you read it.
組成From Old English sundor, 'apart, separate, on its own'. The same old root shows up in Dutch zonder ('without'), German sondern ('to separate'), and — surprisingly — Latin sine, 'without'. The idea underneath all of them is 'apart from, set aside'.
