Describes a place that gets a great deal of sunshine — a beach, an island, a hillside, a terrace, a room with big windows. The picture inside the word is of sunlight poured over the place until it is soaked through, the way rain soaks you when you have no umbrella. That picture matters, because it tells you the feeling. 'Sunny' is a plain fact about weather. 'Sun-drenched' is warm, golden, generous — it makes you want to be there. So it belongs to the language of selling and of pleasant description: holiday brochures, hotel and property advertisements, travel magazines, the opening line of a novel setting a scene. 'Sun-drenched villas on the Amalfi coast.' 'Her sun-drenched studio overlooked the harbour.' Because advertisements use it so much, it has worn a little thin. Many English readers meet it and feel they have met it a thousand times before — it can sound like the writer reached for the nearest ready-made phrase. Good writers still use it, but knowingly. Some use it against itself, describing a sun-drenched place that is empty or sad, so the brightness makes the loneliness worse. It is used mostly of places and the things in places — hills, streets, courtyards, fields, tables, floors. You can stretch it to a stretch of time ('a sun-drenched afternoon') and that reads well. It is used of people much less often, and 'sun-drenched skin' sounds strange to most ears; for people, English prefers 'suntanned' or 'sunburnt'. Always written with the hyphen, and it goes before the noun far more often than after it.
