The adjective for — belonging to that island, or coming from it. You will meet it most often stuck to the front of an animal name, because several animals live only there and nowhere else on earth: the Sumatran tiger, the Sumatran rhino, the Sumatran elephant, the Sumatran orangutan. All of these are in serious danger of dying out, so the word shows up constantly in nature writing and news about conservation. It also describes other things from the island: Sumatran coffee, a Sumatran earthquake, Sumatran forest. The same word can be a noun as well, meaning a person from ("she is a Sumatran"), though in ordinary talk people more often say "she's from ". It always takes a capital S, like all made from place names.

組成Sumatra + -an. The ending -an turns a place into "of that place" or "a person from that place". It is one of the most useful endings you can learn, because it works the same way every time.
