A very large island in western Indonesia — the second biggest island of that country, after is shared and Papua is shared, and the sixth largest in the world. Its biggest city is Medan in the north, though Padang on the west coast is also well known. Things English speakers connect with Sumatra: coffee (Sumatra coffee is famous and you will see the name on coffee bags in Taiwan), tigers, orangutans, rainforest that is being cut down fast, and earthquakes — the 2004 tsunami started just off its coast, and the city of Banda Aceh at its northern tip was destroyed. Sumatra sits along the , so it is hot and wet all year. Note that in English the island name is used on its own without "the" (we say "in Sumatra", not "in the Sumatra"), and it is always capitalised.
組成The name came into English from Portuguese sailors, who took it from Arabic, which took it from Malay Sumatera. Further back it is thought to come from Sanskrit samudra, meaning "sea". Old Sanskrit texts spoke of samudrabhūmi, "the land of the sea". So the island's name may simply mean the sea-place.
