A Jewish festival held in autumn, lasting about a week. It does two things at once. It is a harvest festival — thanks for the crops that have just been gathered in — and it is a remembering festival: it recalls the years when the Jewish people lived in the wilderness in temporary shelters, with no house and no settled land. Families mark it by building a sukkah, a small hut with a roof of branches loose enough to see the stars through, and eating (and sometimes sleeping) in it for the week. That is the whole point of the hut: it is deliberately flimsy, so that a comfortable, housed person spends a week being reminded what it is like not to have walls. In English it is written with a capital S, and you will also see it spelled Succot or Sukkoth, and sometimes translated as the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths — all the same festival. The name is a plural in Hebrew (one hut is a sukkah; sukkot is huts), but in English it is treated as one thing: 'Sukkot is next week', not 'are'.
