Cloth for making suits — usually woven wool, sold by the metre or by the roll. This is a trade word. Tailors, cloth shops and fabric factories use it; ordinary speakers almost never do. You will see it on a shop sign or in a catalogue ('fine Italian suitings'), and notice something odd there: although it names a material, which is normally uncountable, the trade happily says 'suitings' in the plural, meaning different kinds or patterns of the cloth. That plural is normal inside the trade and would sound strange outside it. The word belongs to a small family of fabric words built the same way — shirting for shirt cloth, sheeting for sheet cloth. Do not confuse this noun with the ordinary -ing form of the verb suit, which is far more common: 'a time suiting everyone' is the verb, nothing to do with cloth. Context tells them apart easily: if it is being bought, cut, or described as wool, it is the cloth.
