How well something or someone fits a particular purpose — the quality of being right for the job, the place, the person, or the situation. It is the noun of 'suitable'. Because it is a noun, it names the whole question rather than answering it: you talk about 'the suitability of the site for a school', meaning whether that site is right, how right it is, the matter of its rightness.
How well something or someone fits a particular purpose某個東西或某人適合某個目的的程度 — the quality of being right for the job, the place, the person, or the situation也就是適合這份工作、這個地方、這個人、這個情況的特質。It它 is the noun of 'suitable'是 'suitable' 的名詞形。Because it is a noun因為它是名詞,it這個字 names the whole question rather than answering it是在講「這整個問題」而不是給答案:you talk about 'the suitability of the site for a school'你會說「這個地點適不適合當學校」,meaning whether that site is right意思是那個地點對不對、how right it is有多對、the matter of its rightness也就是它適不適合這件事本身。
It nearly always comes with 'of X' and very often 'for Y' or 'as Y'.
It它 nearly always comes with 'of X'幾乎都會接 'of X' and very often 'for Y' or 'as Y'.而且很常接 'for Y' 或 'as Y'。
This is a formal word. You meet it in reports, job , planning documents, school and hospital paperwork — 'we will assess your suitability for the role', 'a report on the suitability of the building'. In everyday speech people simply say 'whether it's suitable' or 'whether it's right for'. If a student suitability in a email it will sound like a form letter.
This這是 is a formal word一個正式的字。You你 meet it in reports, job adverts, planning documents, school and hospital paperwork會在報告、徵才廣告、規劃文件、學校和醫院的公文裡遇到它——'we will assess your suitability for the role'像是「我們會評估你是否適任這個職位」、'a report on the suitability of the building'「一份關於這棟建築是否合適的報告」。In everyday speech平常說話,people大家 simply say 'whether it's suitable' or 'whether it's right for'.就直接說「適不適合」。If a student writes suitability in a chatty email如果學生在輕鬆的信裡寫 suitability,it會 will sound like a form letter聽起來像公文一樣生硬。
One useful thing about it: it is neutral and a little distant, which is exactly why officials like it. Saying 'we have doubts about his suitability' is a gentle, deniable way of saying 'we don't think he should get it'.
One useful thing about it這個字有個好用的地方:it它 is neutral and a little distant是中性又有點疏離的,which is exactly why officials like it這正是官方喜歡用它的原因。Saying 'we have doubts about his suitability'說「我們對他是否適任有疑慮」 is a gentle, deniable way of saying是一種溫和、留有餘地的說法,用來說 'we don't think he should get it'.「我們覺得他不該得到這個機會」。
(That colour suits you)
- ability共用 -ability 這個結尾(able + -ity)
- availability同樣是 -able 形容詞變成 -ability 名詞,構詞方式一模一樣
- reliability同上:reliable → reliability
