Suffocating describes something that makes it hard or impossible to breathe - like thick smoke, a very hot crowded room, or something covering your face. People also use it for a situation, relationship, or place that feels too controlling, too crowded, or too intense, so you feel trapped even though nothing is physically stopping your breathing - 'a suffocating small town', 'a suffocating relationship'.
