A sufferer is a person who suffers from something, and in real use that something is almost always an illness or a lasting condition: asthma sufferers, migraine sufferers, hay fever sufferers, a sufferer from depression. Notice the two shapes — you can put the illness in front (a diabetes sufferer) or after with from (a sufferer from arthritis); both are normal, and the front one is what newspapers and charities use most. The word is a little formal and belongs to writing more than to talk; a person with asthma would usually just say "I have asthma", not "I am an asthma sufferer". It is also, quietly, going out of favour. Many patient groups now prefer "people with epilepsy" over "epilepsy sufferers", because sufferer defines a whole person by their worst day and makes them sound helpless. So you should understand it everywhere, and choose it carefully. Outside illness, the word can point to anyone hurt by a bad situation — "the real sufferers are the children" — but that use is much rarer.
組成suffer + -er. The ending -er makes a doer noun: the one who does the verb, as in teacher, driver, reader. Suffer itself goes back through Old French to Latin sufferre, from sub- (under) and ferre (to carry) — the one carrying something underneath.
