Succotash is an American dish of sweetcorn and beans — usually lima beans, sometimes green beans — cooked together, often with butter, and in many versions with tomatoes, onion, or peppers added. It is a simple side dish, farmhouse food rather than restaurant food, and it is closely tied to the American South and to Thanksgiving tables in New England. The word comes from the Narragansett language, one of the Native American languages of the northeastern United States, and the dish itself is Native American in origin — corn and beans are two of the "Three Sisters" grown together in traditional Native farming. That history is worth knowing, because it is one of a small number of everyday English words that came directly from a Native American language. Outside the United States, most English speakers have heard the word without ever eating the food. A lot of people know it only from the cartoon phrase "sufferin' succotash!" — said by Sylvester the cat in old Looney Tunes cartoons, where it is nonsense used as a mild exclamation. So if a British friend laughs when you say it, that is why. Pronounced "SUCK-uh-tash", stress on the first part.
