Northern Taiwan is subtropical; the south of the island, below the Tropic of Cancer that runs near Chiayi, is tropical. So this is a word students meet in their own geography lessons before they meet it in English.
Northern Taiwan台灣北部 is subtropical屬於subtropical亞熱帶 the south of the island而台灣南部 below the Tropic of Cancer在北回歸線以下 that runs near Chiayi北回歸線經過嘉義附近 is tropical則是熱帶 So this is a word所以這是一個 Taiwanese students meet in their own geography lessons台灣學生在地理課上就會先遇到的字 before they meet it in English早於在英文裡遇到它

It is used of climates它可以用來形容氣候 of regions地區 and of the plants and animals that belong there也可以形容屬於那裡的動植物 a subtropical climate像subtropical的氣候 subtropical fruit subtropical的水果 a subtropical forest或subtropical的森林 The feeling it gives它給人的感覺 is humid heat with a break是「有喘息空間的濕熱」 hot sticky summers又濕又黏的夏天 mild but not freezing winters但冬天溫和、不會結凍
Be aware that people stretch it. In everyday speech and especially in travel writing and property advertising, "subtropical" often just means " warm and a bit exotic," with no real thought about latitude at all. A hotel in a place that is not subtropical by any scientist's measure may still describe its garden as subtropical because it has palm trees. Scientists themselves also disagree about exactly where the boundaries fall, so even the technical use has soft edges.
Be aware that people stretch it要注意人們會把這個字用得更寬鬆 In everyday speech在日常口語裡 and especially in travel writing and property advertising尤其在旅遊文案和房地產廣告裡 "subtropical"這個字 often just means "pleasantly warm and a bit exotic,"常常只是在說「舒服溫暖,帶點異國風情」 with no real thought about latitude at all完全沒真的在想緯度的問題 A hotel在某個地方的一間飯店 in a place that is not subtropical by any scientist's measure那個地方就算用科學標準來看根本不算subtropical may still describe its garden as subtropical還是可能把自己的花園說成subtropical because it has palm trees只因為裡面種了棕櫚樹 Scientists themselves科學家自己 also disagree about exactly where the boundaries fall對邊界到底該畫在哪裡也有分歧 so even the technical use has soft edges所以就連專業用法都有模糊地帶
組成sub- (under, below, near to) + tropical. Here sub- carries its "just below / nearly" meaning rather than "underneath" — subtropical land sits just below the tropical band on a map, and is almost but not quite tropical. Tropical comes from tropic, from Greek tropos, a turning — the line where the sun appears to turn back.
