Subsequently means 'after that', and it points backwards from now to a chain of past events: first this happened, and subsequently that happened. It is the formal cousin of 'later' or 'afterwards'. A news report says 'He was arrested and subsequently released'; a friend telling the same story says 'They arrested him and then let him go'. Same meaning, very different clothes. Two things are worth noticing. First, it usually carries a small sense of 'and this followed from that' — not proof of cause, but a hint that the second thing came out of the first. 'The factory closed; subsequently the town got poorer' feels connected, not just ordered. Second, English has a pair here that students mix up all the time: subsequently (after) and consequently (because of that, as a result). They look almost the same and mean different things. Where do you meet subsequently? Reports, news, academic writing, formal letters, and reading passages, which love it. In speech it sounds a bit stiff unless you are being careful or official — a doctor, a lawyer, a manager giving an account of what happened. Note also that it needs a past event to come after; you cannot use it for the future. For that, English says 'later' or 'after that'.
