The Styx is a river in Greek mythology — the river that separates the world of the living from Hades, the land of the dead. When someone died, the rowed their soul across it. Families sometimes put a coin in the dead person's mouth to pay him for the crossing, because did not work for free.
It is always 'the Styx', with 'the', the way we say the Thames or the Nile. And it takes a capital S, because it is a name.
Why would an English need this? Because it is part of the furniture of English writing. The Styx is where the phrase 'crossing the river' as an image for dying comes from, and the gods swore their most serious, oaths by its water — so a promise 'sworn on the Styx' meant one that could never be taken back. You will meet the name in poetry, in novels, in fantasy games, and in the word '', which means very dark and gloomy, as in ' darkness'.
