A stump is the short, low part of a tree left in the ground after the rest has been cut down — you often see them in a forest after logging, or you can sit on one like a small stool. From this, English also uses 'stump' as a verb: if a question or problem 'stumps' you, it completely confuses you and you cannot think of the answer — like your brain hit a stump and stopped moving. In cricket, the stumps are also the three wooden sticks the batter defends, but that is a more specialized, sport-only meaning.
