A stub is a short leftover piece of something after the main part has been used or removed — like a ticket stub (the part you keep after handing in the main ticket), a pencil stub (a very short, almost-used-up pencil), or a stub (the record part you keep). As a verb, 'to stub your toe' means to hit your toe hard against something by accident — very common in everyday speech.
