Strumpet is a very old insulting word for a woman who sells sex, or more loosely for any woman the speaker thinks is about sex. The important thing for a is that nobody uses it seriously today. You meet it in Shakespeare, in old novels, in period films — that is its real home. If a modern English speaker says it at all, they are joking, or being deliberately theatrical, the way someone might say 'thou villain'. Because it is so clearly old-fashioned, it lands as funny more often than as cruel, but the cruelty is still inside it: like all such words, it exists to shame a woman, and there is no matching word for a man. So read it, understand it, and leave it alone in your own speech. Its history is genuinely uncertain — scholars have suggested a Middle Dutch word for stalking about, and a Latin word for violation, but none of these is settled. It is one of those words whose beginning is simply lost.
妓女、蕩婦(極古舊的罵人話,只在莎士比亞或古典文學裡看得到,現代人不用)
組成來源不確定。中古英文 strumpet,再往前就眾說紛紜:可能來自中古荷蘭文 strompen「潛行、遊蕩」或 strompe「長襪」,也可能來自晚期拉丁文 stuprum「侵犯」。學者沒有共識。
