A journalist who sends stories to a newspaper or news organisation regularly, but is not on its staff. A stringer usually lives somewhere the paper has no office — a foreign city, a small town — and is paid per story or by the amount printed, not by the month. So a stringer is a real, trusted, ongoing contributor, but with no salary, no desk, and none of the safety a staff job gives.
That last part matters. When you read that a stringer was or killed covering a war, part of the story is often that stringers take the same risks as staff reporters with much less protection and much less pay. The word is normal vocabulary, neither respectful nor rude — just a job description.
It sits between 'staff reporter' (employed, ) and 'freelancer' (sells to anyone, no fixed relationship). A stringer has a standing arrangement with one paper without being employed by it.
The same spelling means other things in other fields — a long supporting piece of wood or metal in a boat, plane, or staircase — but the news meaning is the one meet.
組成string + -er 'a person who does this'. The usual explanation is that such reporters were once paid by the length of what got printed — the column of type measured off like a length of string — though that story is repeated more confidently than the evidence really allows.
