A baseball word. The pitcher throws; if the batter gets three strikes (a swing and a miss, or a good ball he does not swing at), his turn is over — he is out. That whole event is a strikeout. It counts as a small victory for the pitcher, so the number is kept as one of a pitcher's main : 'he had twelve strikeouts in that game' means he ended twelve batters' turns this way.
So the same event has two sides in English. The pitcher records a strikeout; the batter suffers one. You can say 'the batter struck out' (verb, two words) or 'that was a strikeout' (noun, one word). Written as one word or with a , it is the noun; written as two words, it is the verb.
Outside baseball, Americans use 'strike out' as a verb to mean fail completely, especially after trying: 'I asked three companies for a job and struck out every time.' The noun strikeout is less common in that everyday sense, but people will understand it. students meet this word constantly if they follow 中華職棒 or MLB.
