Streptococcus is a kind of bacteria — a very small living thing that can make you ill. It is best known for throat infections; when a doctor says a child has 'strep throat', this is the bacteria they mean. The same family can also cause skin infections, scarlet fever, and some more serious illnesses. It is a technical, medical word: doctors and nurses use it, and you see it on test results and in news reports about outbreaks. In ordinary speech almost nobody says the whole word — English speakers it to 'strep' ('a strep test', 'she has strep'). The plural is streptococci, and the adjective is streptococcal, which you will see in phrases like 'streptococcal infection'. Note that these bacteria, unlike a virus such as flu, can be killed by antibiotics, which is why a doctor gives medicine for strep throat but tells you to just rest with a cold.
組成strepto-（希臘文「扭轉、鏈狀」）+ -coccus（希臘文「球狀顆粒」）。這種細菌在顯微鏡下一顆一顆連成一串，像一條鏈子，所以叫「鏈狀的球菌」——中文譯名「鏈球菌」正好把這個畫面翻出來了。
