Used to describe a person, usually a young man, who is tall, big, strong-looking and healthy. It is a warm, word — it paints a picture of someone with broad shoulders who looks like they could carry heavy things all day. It is almost always used right before the noun (a strapping young man, a strapping lad, a strapping six-footer), and it is very often paired with the word young. You will notice it sounds a little old-fashioned or storybook; and novels use it more than teenagers do. It is used for women too, but much less often. It describes how someone looks, not how they behave — a strapping young man could still be shy and gentle. Careful: strapping is also just the -ing form of the verb strap ("He was strapping his bag to the bike"), and it can be a noun meaning strong bands of material used to hold something. Those are different uses of the same spelling.
