Strangeways is a large prison in Manchester, in the north-west of England. Its official name was changed to HM Prison Manchester after a famous riot there in 1990, but British people still call it Strangeways, and in British English the name works a bit like a word: to say someone 'is in Strangeways' or 'did five years in Strangeways' is simply to say they are in prison, in the way a Taiwanese speaker might name a specific well-known institution and everyone understands what is meant. It is a proper noun, so it takes a capital letter and no 'the' — you say 'in Strangeways', not 'in the Strangeways'. It is also the name of the district of Manchester the prison stands in. For a learner this is mostly reading vocabulary: you meet it in British news, crime novels and song titles, and the useful thing is simply to recognise that it is a place name, not a common noun. Note the final -s belongs to the name and never comes off.
