A straitlaced person has strict, old-fashioned ideas about right and wrong behaviour — especially about sex, drinking, swearing, clothes, how young people should act. They are easily shocked and they disapprove out loud. The word is mildly negative: you use it when you think someone's morals are tighter than they need to be. Calling your aunt straitlaced is gently teasing; calling a school or a town straitlaced says it feels stiff and unfree. It is not the same as 'moral' or 'honest' — a straitlaced person may be perfectly kind, but they are rigid, and the criticism is about rigidity, not about being good. You will see it spelled straitlaced, strait-laced, or (commonly, though purists object) straightlaced. The image inside it is a corset laced up tight: a body squeezed in and unable to bend, which is exactly how the person's moral sense works.
