A stoup is a stone basin holding holy water, set near the door inside a church — usually a Catholic or Anglican one. People dip their fingers in as they come in and make the sign of the cross. It is often built into the wall or standing on a short pillar, and in old churches it can be hundreds of years old and worn smooth by hands. This is a narrow, specialist word. You will meet it in church guidebooks, in writing about old buildings, and in histories — almost nowhere else. Most English speakers, including church-goers, would say "the holy water font" or just "the holy water" in ordinary talk. So do not feel you must use it; recognising it is enough. There is an older meaning worth knowing if you read old books or Scottish writing: a stoup was also simply a drinking vessel or a jug, and "a stoup of ale" meant a good measure of it. That use is long dead in modern English but survives in old songs and poems. It is pronounced to rhyme with "soup", not with "group" — though those two do rhyme with each other, which is exactly the sort of thing English does to be difficult.
