Stop and stay somewhere for a short time in the middle of a longer journey, most often a flight. No object: we stopped over in Bangkok. The noun is 'stopover', which is the word you see when booking flights. In American English, 'stop over' can also mean to visit someone's house briefly, but the flight meaning is the one to keep.
